Pull up the websites for Klaviyo and Mailchimp, and you'll notice something right away: each brand targets a vastly different audience. Mailchimp plasters its friendly monkey logo everywhere and uses accessible language like clicks, sales, and customer loyalty. Klaviyo's website is jet black, features Fortune 500 companies like Unilever, and talks about uniform data, agentic commerce, and omnichannel promotions.
Simple enough to choose between them, right? Kind of. Under the veneer of its accessible branding, Mailchimp has become surprisingly powerful. And while Klaviyo looks and feels like an enterprise tool, it caters to eCommerce brands of all sizes.
I've updated this article for the past two years to keep it current as new features have come out, and I've also tested Klaviyo and Mailchimp separately to compare them against other products. Both platforms have made changes recently, so I tested each one extensively to understand how the latest changes have affected their ease of use, analytics, eCommerce and automation capabilities, and AI features. In this article, I'll share my findings so you can decide which platform makes sense for you.

Its advanced personalization, workflows, analytics, and AI features are designed to help you get more ROI from your eCommerce efforts, and its Customer Agent and Helpdesk add-ons make it easier to provide post-purchase support.

Mailchimp is easier to use for beginners
Mailchimp prioritizes simplicity and ease of use, while Klaviyo is for (primarily eCommerce) brands that are serious about ramping up their marketing game.
Both Mailchimp and Klaviyo offer similar user interfaces, with a left-hand menu displaying tabs for campaigns, audience, content creation, and analytics. But Mailchimp finds a way to get you what you need without overloading you with options.
Just look at the process for organizing new contacts in Mailchimp using its delightfully simple tagging system. You'll see automatic suggestions for popular tags like Customer, as well as the option to add your own custom tag right there, making it quick to organize your contacts in bulk.

In Klaviyo, just figuring out how to add contacts presents a challenge: after clicking around for a few minutes, I realized you can't import contacts until you choose the list you want to add them to. Tagging exists in Klaviyo, too, but you can only tag lists and segments (not contacts).
It all makes sense eventually, but it isn't nearly as intuitive as Mailchimp's foolproof system:
Add contacts
Tag your contacts
Create segments
Segmentation is another area where Mailchimp manages to include powerful features while making them easy to use. Users are funneled by default toward Mailchimp's prebuilt segments, with options ranging from Disengaged subscribers to High-value customers.

At the same time, you can easily access more complex segmentation features by clicking Create segment.

While Mailchimp tends to be simpler than Klaviyo across the board, new AI features are starting to make Klaviyo more intuitive. For example, you can now use Klaviyo AI to create custom segments using natural language. (I'll talk about each app's AI features more in a bit.)

Mailchimp offers more marketing channels for small businesses
If you're looking for a marketing tool that lets you reach your audience on several digital channels at once, Mailchimp has plenty to offer. It lets you create and manage emails, SMS messages, landing pages, paid ads, popup forms, social posts, and surveys—all from within the platform.

Mailchimp even manages to make website building one of its core features. New businesses can use Mailchimp as an all-in-one studio for building a website, selling products, and booking appointments. While you shouldn't expect the kind of flexibility you'd get on a purpose-built website platform like WordPress or Webflow, Mailchimp makes it easy to get a website up and running—and, crucially, to integrate it with your list-building and marketing efforts.

Klaviyo used to focus mainly on email and SMS, but it's now added a feature called Klaviyo Social Marketing that uses your brand's social activity and mentions to improve the performance of your campaigns. (Klaviyo Social Marketing is a paid add-on starting at $50/month for 10,000 profiles.)
After you connect it to your Instagram, Klaviyo works in a couple of ways:
Social Content Library: Klaviyo automatically grabs your posts, Reels, and stories, plus any user-generated content you're tagged in. You can then embed top-performing content into your emails and SMS campaigns.
Auto-replies: When your social followers comment on a post or DM a keyword, auto-replies capture their email, SMS, and WhatsApp consent and turn it into a Klaviyo profile. From there, you can send personalized campaigns.

It's worth highlighting the fact that Klaviyo integrates with WhatsApp. Mailchimp doesn't, which may be a factor if you're in a market where WhatsApp is the default channel for eCommerce communication. And Klaviyo has recently added landing pages, which is another way it's expanding its footprint.
Still, Klaviyo doesn't touch paid ads, social media scheduling, surveys, or website building. Its channel integrations are fine-tuned for eCommerce operations; if you're looking for more of an all-in-one small business feature set, Mailchimp is usually a better pick.
Klaviyo offers more for eCommerce brands, including a full customer service suite
While Mailchimp is more suited to small businesses and solo content creators, Klaviyo is ideal for eCommerce brands, and its features go far beyond Social Marketing tools. From the moment you set up your account, Klaviyo is fully focused on eCommerce; one of your first tasks is to link it to one of 20+ available eCommerce platforms (including niche options like Vinoshipper, a direct-to-consumer (DTC) platform for wineries, breweries, and distilleries).
Because it integrates tightly with a sizable selection of eCommerce-focused apps, you can use Klaviyo to deliver enterprise-level eCommerce service. Unilever, Glossier, and Mattel all use Klaviyo, as do many prominent Shopify-hosted DTC brands.
For example, Klaviyo integrates with an app called AfterShip, which handles post-purchase activities like shipping, tracking, and returns. By connecting these two apps, you can:
Notify customers by email and SMS with real-time delivery updates.
Reach out with personalized messages to customers whose orders have been delayed.
Request product reviews a certain number of days after the shipment is marked as delivered.
While eCommerce automations can be overwhelming to set up—especially when you're starting from scratch—Klaviyo strikes a nice balance between features and accessibility. It's easy to start from an automation template and then adjust triggers, timing, and actions afterwards.

Klaviyo recently expanded its selection of automation templates from around a dozen to 60+. You can now find templates addressing everything from abandoned checkouts to "back in stock" notification flows. Each template comes with platform-specific variations, so regardless of the platform you're using or your marketing channel, you'll probably find a template that lets you launch with one click.

Mailchimp has a solid selection of templates too, with 100+ prebuilt automation flows ranging from Reward VIP customers to Thank repeat customers with SMS.

Klaviyo's eCommerce analytics are superior to Mailchimp's, with features like review sentiment analysis, predictive analytics, and revenue-driven recommendations. You can even compare your brand's performance with other organizations in your niche using Klaviyo's benchmarks report. The more email and SMS campaigns you send, the more insights and comparisons to your assigned "peer group" are available in Klaviyo's analytics dashboard.

And with the release of a few new features, Klaviyo now helps you run your entire eCommerce customer service operation, including customer experience, agentic commerce, and customer support. (Mailchimp doesn't attempt to get into this category at all.)
Customer Hub is a signed-in experience that's built into your online shop. It allows your shoppers to track orders, manage subscriptions, apply coupons, discover new products, and access customer service chat.

Customer Agent is an AI layer that resolves customer questions across email, chat, SMS, and WhatsApp. Since Klaviyo already has all of your customers' purchase data, plus any past tickets they may have opened, Customer Agent is able to give personalized answers. It can also take action by doing things like initiating returns and suggesting the right size based on past purchases. You can also define under which circumstances the AI agent should hand off to a human agent.

Finally, there's also now an AI-powered Klaviyo Helpdesk to complete the customer service suite. Interactions from the Customer Agent are routed here, complete with AI summaries so human agents have full context. Like most helpdesks, Klaviyo Helpdesk lets you manage conversations from multiple channels in one place—but it does so with the benefit of being able to access your existing email marketing and eCommerce data behind the scenes.

Klaviyo's AI features go further than Mailchimp's
Mailchimp's AI, which is known as Intuit Assist, focuses on speeding up tasks you'd otherwise do yourself, like writing copy, designing emails, and building segments. Klaviyo does those things too, but its latest tool, Composer, goes further. Composer is an AI marketing agent that can make marketing recommendations and turn them into actual, full-fledged campaigns.
Let's start with Mailchimp. I've been reviewing Mailchimp's AI features for a few years now, and each year, I'm surprised at how slow the development is and how modest Mailchimp's ambitions are when it comes to integrating AI. A typical feature, like this AI-generated column widget below, gives you a small productivity boost, but certainly doesn't radically change your workflow.

Other features, like Mailchimp's "AI revenue intelligence system," have been in the works for years with no release in sight. And if you're outside of the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, you probably won't see many AI features at all: Mailchimp has geo-restricted most of its AI features so only users in those countries can access them.
I'll give Mailchimp credit for its AI segment builder, send-time optimization, and predictive demographics. It also offers AI-powered flow templates, which automatically pull in your brand details and build out both the automation flow and the corresponding email content. But there are only three templates to choose from, and I haven't seen any new ones added in years.

Mailchimp's recent press releases do say that "conversational and agentic AI across Mailchimp" is coming soon, so hopefully a platform-wide AI update is forthcoming.
Klaviyo's Composer is a better example of what you're probably expecting when you sign up for an AI-assisted tool these days. There are a few ways to interact with it:
You can use it as an AI assistant and ask questions about your account.
You can initiate one-click actions that do things like audit all your segments.
You can ask it to build an entire campaign for you, from start to finish.

After chatting with Composer for a few minutes, it produced a customer reactivation campaign for me, complete with the email template and copy. While I wasn't blown away by the first draft, it's easy to fine-tune via chat. I imagine that real brands with a deeper history of email campaigns would get better results.

Klaviyo also offers AI-driven data insights. With Klaviyo's predictive analytics feature, you can get a sense for when customers will likely order again and what their churn risk is. For example, you can identify customers who aren't predicted to order again, add them to a segment, and then craft a winback campaign designed to boost sales.

In addition to Klaviyo's AI segment builder, which I mentioned earlier, Klaviyo also has an AI flow generator. It's a major time-saver, and can handle even relatively complicated automation scenarios.

Klaviyo has a better free plan; Mailchimp's paid plans are more affordable
Klaviyo and Mailchimp seem to keep their entry-level pricing at parity: for 500 contacts, you'll pay $20/month for comparable email marketing plans on both platforms. If you're looking at free plans or high-volume plans, though, you'll find bigger differences.
If you're starting from scratch or only have a handful of contacts, Klaviyo offers a fuller experience on its free plan. You get access to nearly the entire platform for free as long as you have 250 contacts or under, including flows, segmentation, multi-step automations, and A/B testing. Mailchimp's free plan is notably limited by comparison, with no A/B testing, no multi-step automations, and basic segmentation. With both platforms, monthly emails are capped at 500 sends.
Klaviyo gets much pricier than Mailchimp if you have a big email list. At 15,000 contacts, you'll pay $350/month for Klaviyo and $230/month for Mailchimp. For 30,000 contacts, Klaviyo is $500/month, while Mailchimp is $340/month. And if you want access to Klaviyo's best features, it's easy to pay thousands of dollars per month for add-ons if you're a decent-sized eCommerce brand.
Mailchimp also lets you scale up more gradually from the free plan. Mailchimp's Essentials plan, at $13/month for 500 contacts and $27/month for 1,500 contacts, is a great choice for small businesses who have outgrown the free plan but still aren't ready to pay big bucks for more analytics and eCommerce automations than they need.
Both platforms integrate with hundreds of apps—and thousands more via Zapier
Both Mailchimp and Klaviyo offer hundreds of native integrations with eCommerce apps, CRM tools, and more, but because they both integrate with Zapier, you have the option to securely connect them with thousands of other tools as well.
Automatically add new subscribers to Klaviyo or Mailchimp when someone fills out a Typeform, submits a Facebook Lead Ad, or converts in Google Ads. Or you can sync new Airtable records to your subscriber list, automatically post new campaigns to WordPress for content repurposing, or archive every new subscriber to Google Sheets the moment they sign up. Across both platforms, you can set up multi-step workflows that span your whole stack, all from a single trigger.
If you work in an AI assistant, you can connect Zapier MCP to take action in your apps straight from your chat window. Ask your AI to add a Klaviyo subscriber, update a Mailchimp list, or kick off a multi-step workflow without leaving your conversation. Learn more about how to automate Klaviyo or Mailchimp.
Mailchimp vs. Klaviyo: Which one is best for you?
If you're not quite sure which app makes sense for you, here's the bottom line.
Choose Mailchimp if you're looking for an all-in-one small business marketing tool. You can get a long way by relying on Mailchimp as your website builder, social media scheduler, CRM, and all-purpose digital marketing suite, and it covers all the marketing channels you'd want as a brick-and-mortar business or small brand.
Choose Klaviyo if you're looking to grow your eCommerce business with state-of-the-art automations, in-depth analytics, and advanced AI. Composer can build entire campaigns from a prompt, and Customer Agent and Helpdesk have expanded Klaviyo into a full eCommerce customer service tool. While Klaviyo takes time to learn, there's no better tool if your goal is to drive engagement, boost sales, and support customers after the sale, all from one platform.
