Map nested data in Zaps with enhanced field mapping

By Joe Stych · May 20, 2026
Illustration of two Zapier field mapping dropdowns for a Slack step, one with enhanced field mappings off above five flat fields such as User Profile First Name, the other with it on above a tree of Text, Channel with ID and Name, and User with Name.

Mapping data from an API response, webhook, or AI step often means scrolling through flattened field names and guessing which one holds your value. You can now turn on enhanced field mapping in the Zap editor to see that data as nested objects, arrays, and lists, each with its type, so you can map the right field with confidence.

Turn on enhanced field mapping

It's a toggle in the field mapping dropdown, so you can try it on any Zap without changing how that Zap runs.

  1. Open an action step in your Zap and go to the Configure tab.

  2. Click the plus button at the end of a field.

  3. Switch on the Turn on enhanced field mappings toggle.

The dropdown now shows step data as a tree, and you can switch the toggle off any time to go back to the classic view. The guide to mapping fields between steps has the full steps.

Find the right field without guessing

Instead of one long list, nested data opens as a tree, so you only expand the part you need.

  1. On the Data tab, open Previous Steps and expand the step with your data.

  2. Open an object to see its child fields.

  3. Check the type icon next to each field.

  4. Select the field you want to map.

A { } icon marks an object, T marks text, and a list icon marks an array. To map a Slack user's first name, open User, then Profile, and select First Name instead of hunting for User Profile First Name in a long list.

Map exactly the data your next step needs

Pick the level you need from the same tree, from one value to a whole object.

  • Single value. Select one field, such as an email address.

  • Whole array or object. Select an array (a list of items) or an object (a group of fields) to map all of it.

  • Line items. Hover a field inside an array and click the Get all values icon to map it as line items, so you can skip the separate Formatter step.
