Our data pledge to Zapier customers
December 5, 2022
At Zapier, our mission is to make automation work for everyone, so every person and business can move forward at growth speed. Today, millions of businesses trust Zapier to automate their most important work, including the information and data that drives their business.
Our customers come first, and that's the foundation of how we approach all aspects of our business—from the products we build to how we handle and process customer data across apps.
With that in mind, we pledge the following to Zapier customers in regard to how we manage the data that you upload or transmit using Zapier, which we'll call "data" from here on out:
1. You own the data you upload or transmit using Zapier
First and foremost, you own your data. Zapier doesn't own data that you upload or transmit using Zapier, and while we can't speak for each of our 5,000+ partners or the terms included in your contracts with them, we assume that you own your data and have designed Zapier services accordingly. We want customers to feel free to upload, use, modify, transfer, or delete their data in ways that will benefit and grow their businesses. You know how to do that far better than we do, and we think that's going to be much harder if we're claiming ownership or co-ownership of your data.
This isn't just an empty promise; it's weaved directly into Section 5(a) of our TOS. Moreover, we're only going to use your data as you instruct us, as needed to operate our service, or otherwise as required by law. That's it. Our business is helping you grow and expand your business, not owning or selling your valuable data.
2. You control which Zapier partners you connect with
We want you to use your data in ways that will benefit your business the most. We have 5,000+ app partners and Zapier products like Transfer that you can connect and automate. Once Zapier approves an integration for publication, we don't control or limit its availability to customers. On a Company account, you can also block partner connections of your choice, so your employees don't accidentally send data to services you haven't approved.
3. You control what data is shared with Zapier or any Zapier partner
We also understand that you might not want all your data in all your systems and apps. That's why you decide what data to share with Zapier or any Zapier partner based on how you design your Zapier workflows (such as Zaps). While Zapier provides lots of Zap templates to give you inspiration, you can adjust those templates as you choose or design your own Zaps from scratch. Ultimately, Zapier's automation services are designed so that you provide instructions and Zapier's services carry them out. This is to help you feel confident that we're not using/sharing your data beyond how you have instructed us to do so or have otherwise agreed.
The principle works in both directions. Zapier and Zapier partners are continuously enhancing Zapier integrations to support the transfer of more data fields and actions. We believe that these choices will inspire businesses like yours to be creative and to think about all the ways that automation can improve your efficiency and help your business grow.
4. You control how your data is stored by Zapier
We understand the importance of controlling how your data is stored, especially on SaaS-based systems. We have developed tools like Zap History to assist you with reviewing data transferred through Zapier and removing data you no longer need on a run-by-run basis. You can also delete individual Zaps/workflows/records, all the data in your Zapier account, or your Zapier account altogether at any time.
In addition to this range of on-demand deletion options, Zapier provides both standard and custom data retention options based on your subscription plan. This ensures that even if you don't manually delete your data from our systems, it will automatically be deleted in accordance with our retention schedule. For other Zapier tools, like Tables, where you might want to store your data longer-term, we'll safely secure it until you choose to delete it. Your data belongs to you, and you get to make these decisions, not Zapier.
You can also export your data anytime, either at the Zap History level or for all the data in your Zapier account. We provide your data in CSV and JSON formats so that it's easily accessible whether you just want a backup or if you want to move it to another system.
5. With control comes responsibility
Customers have responsibilities as well. In particular, you've agreed to use Zapier in accordance with our TOS and AUP, which prohibit things like illegal activities on Zapier. If you're connecting to a partner integration, you've agreed to that partner's terms. We don't limit which partners customers can connect with, and we require customers to be fair to partners by not using Zapier to circumvent your separate agreements with them.
We're committed to the growth of your company through automation, and we hope that our "it's your data" pledge gives you confidence in how Zapier treats one of your most valuable resources.
Whether you're a customer or partner, and whether you're just starting to learn about us or we're already working together on your automation journey, we thank you.
