To help share a bit more about life at Zapier, here are a few resources in addition to the job description that can give you an inside look at what life is like at Zapier. Hopefully, you'll take the leap of faith and apply.

Zapier is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace dedicated to pursuing and hiring a diverse workforce.

Even though our job description may seem like we are looking for a candidate with a very specific skillset, the role will be tailored to the person who applies and joins. Regardless of how well you feel you fit our description, we encourage you to apply if you meet these criteria:

You love to collaborate with data scientists, engineers, customer support, and business and operations experts to understand and address their data needs and help them become more efficient.

About You

You are a skilled written communicator. Zapier is a 100% remote team and writing is our primary means of communication. You can communicate unfamiliar technical topics clearly and approachably.

You enjoy helping teams run more effectively. As we help the business world be more efficient, we want to to maintain timely, helpful responses to our new and long-time users. You have relevant experience and a passion for making that a reality.

You have experience finding patterns in data. You’ve synthesized diverse data sets to find patterns. You’ve analyzed structured and unstructured data using heuristics, categorical predictive models, natural language processing, or machine learning methods. You've employed these models in categorizing incoming data and designed the output with an eye towards ease of use and high performance.

You appreciate our team’s values of eagerness to collaborate with teammates with any level of statistical knowledge, iterating over your deliverables, and being curious.

You understand that perfect is the enemy of good and default to action by initially shipping code that simply works and works simply, while iterating as needed to get towards better solutions.

Things You Might Do

Zapier is a small, fast-growing, and remote-first company, so you'll likely get experience on many different projects across the organization. That said, here are some things you'll probably do:

  • Rapidly ingest data from a variety of sources and APIs.
  • Categorize incoming data based on history. This could be assigning a level of difficulty to a support ticket, categorizing new users into marketing personas, auto-generating support responses, or whatever strikes your curiosity this week. The tools you’ll use include AWS Redshift SQL, Kafka, Airflow, Kubernetes, Matillion ETL, and custom Python and R jobs.
  • Assist teammates using the data: assemble analysis, predictions, visualizations, queries, and dashboards. Tools used include SQL and Looker. If you're so inclined we've also used ggplot2, Shiny, R Markdown and Jupyter notebooks.
  • As a part of Zapier's all-hands philosophy, help customers via support to ensure they have the best experience possible.

About Zapier

For the past six years, Zapier has been helping people across the world automate the boring and tedious parts of their job. We do that by helping everyone connect the web applications they already use and love.

We believe that there are jobs a computer is best at doing and that there are jobs a human is best at doing. We want to empower businesses to create processes and systems that let computers do what they are best at doing and let humans do what they are best at doing.

We believe that with the right tools, you can have big impact with less hassle.

We believe in small teams. Small teams are fast and nimble. Small teams mean less bureaucracy and less management and more getting things done.

We believe that credentials don't say everything. Our CTO has a finance degree. Our CEO has an engineering degree. Our CPO has a mechanical engineering degree. What you love doing is way more important than the credentials you have.

We believe in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. All teammates at Zapier agree to a code of conduct.

Complete this form with answers to the questions below. Make sure each answer stands alone as we review question-by-question instead of applicant-by-applicant.

  2. Tell us about a time where you’ve gained novel insights into a dataset. Were you looking for those insights? Why or why not? What outcome or initiative did the insights lead to?
  3. Tell us about a project where you found patterns in unstructured data. What was the data set? How did you create structure out of it? What did the output look like?
  4. Describe a time where you synthesized multiple sources into a unified data set. Tell us how you decided what your sources were and the steps you took to combine them.
  5. What data analysis tools/platforms/databases/techniques/software do you have experience with? Which ones do you rank yourself as an expert in?
  6. Share links to sites that showcase your professional works (GitHub, LinkedIn, Twitter, a personal site, etc.) if you have some you can share. If the work is proprietary and can’t be shared, provide us with 500+ lines of code as a private gist to help us get a feel for how you write code.
  7. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you, your experience, and your application?
  8. Where did hear about this role?
  9. What time zone are you located in?
  10. Optional: Share anonymously some demographic information about yourself to help us better track trends related to the backgrounds of candidates interested in working at Zapier in order for us to build a team that represents the users at Zapier and the broader world population.

Finally, wait for us to reply! You are going to hear back from us, even if we don't seem like a good fit. In fact, throughout the process, we strive to make sure you never go more than seven days without hearing from us.
