How to collaborate with AI during Zapier's hiring process
At Zapier, we’re all about working smarter — and that includes using AI. We build and use automation every day to make work more efficient, creative, and human.

So if you’re using AI tools while applying here — that’s great! We just ask that you use them responsibly and transparently. We want to get to know you — your experience, your ideas, and how you think — not what a tool generates for you.
Below, you’ll find guidance on when and how to use AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or others during our hiring process — and when not to.
Examples of encouraged vs. not allowed usage
| Stage / Scenario | ✅ Thoughtful use | 🚫 AI Slop | Example prompt | なぜ重要なのか |
|---|---|---|---|---|
When Applying (Resume, Application Questions) | Use AI to polish how you describe your work, check clarity, or organize your resume. | Asking AI to create fake experience, titles, or achievements. Using AI to fabricate experience or projects (“Write a resume for a Zapier recruiter with 10 years of experience”). | “Review my resume and Zapier’s job description. Suggest ways to better highlight my automation experience.” “Help me rewrite this bullet to show measurable results.” | We want to see your real story — AI can help you tell it more clearly, not rewrite it. We love clarity — not creative fiction. |
Take-Home or Skills Assessments | Use AI to brainstorm, outline ideas, or proofread, unless otherwise noted to not use it. | Having AI complete the task, write your code, or generate your deliverables (unless we say otherwise). | “Give me feedback on whether my reasoning is clear and easy to follow.” | These exercises show how you think — that’s what we’re assessing. |
Preparing for Interviews | Use AI to research Zapier, automation trends, and practice your stories or responses. Use AI to learn about Zapier’s mission, products, and team culture. | Copying AI-written answers or using AI scripts during interviews. | “Summarize Zapier’s mission and how automation impacts recruiting.” | We’re curious about your authentic experience, not generic responses. AI can help you prepare, but the story should still be yours. |
During Live Interviews | No use of AI is permitted during live interviews, unless it is a required part of a skills presentation. | Using AI in real time (e.g., prompts, voice changers, AI-generated visuals, or off-camera coaching). | — | Live interviews help us understand how you think, solve problems, and connect with others. Collaboration, curiosity, and authentic communication are core to how we work at Zapier — things AI can’t replicate. |
Why these guidelines exist
We encourage people to use AI to improve their work — it’s what we do, too. But we also take candidate authenticity and data protection seriously.
We’ve built our hiring process to highlight authentic thinking and real experience. We want to see how you use AI thoughtfully — not how well you can hide it. That means:
- Use AI as your collaborator, not your creator.
- Be transparent about when and how you use AI if asked.
- Stay authentic — we’re hiring humans, not prompts.
In short
AI is a great teammate — when used effectively. Use it to clarify and expand your ideas, not to replace your own thinking. We’re not looking for AI to do the work for you — we want to see how you use it to build, explore, and communicate your ideas.
