Vibe coding tools like Lovable and AI coding agents like Codex and Claude Code have totally changed the concept of building. You can now create a web app from a couple of text prompts, so can you do the same with a website? In short, yes. Though it's not quite as simple as that. 

The claim is that AI website builders can streamline everything from designing a site to creating the content, organizing it into the appropriate pages, and even getting it online. It's a bold claim, and it's mostly true: the latest tools can handle all the technical bits. The catch is that I refuse to accept that AI-generated stock text and imagery is appropriate for a legitimate website. 

This means we're in an interesting place. It's never been technically easier to launch a website, but the bottleneck is still creating the content, uploading images, and generally making your site representative of you and your business. So while we're looking at the best AI website generators, I'm just as interested in how easy it is to maintain a legitimate website rather than launch a one-off web page. 

I've been building websites for over 20 years and have used hard-coded HTML, WordPress, every site builder you can name, and even, on one regrettable occasion, Drupal. In that time, getting a site live has become a lot simpler and easier. Currently, I use Claude Code and Codex to manage multiple websites directly. It's allowed me to use Ghost, WordPress, and React with the kind of technical ease I've never had before. If I'm honest, this is probably the best way to use AI to build a website. 

But if you want something where you don't have to worry about the code, read on. Let's look at the best AI website builders.

For the past few years, AI (or some variation on the theme) has been the hottest marketing buzzword around. Of the more than 50 tools I tested, very few of them were usable, let alone good.

There are a few key reasons for this. First, building something that works kind of like an AI website builder is now fairly straightforward. Connect any of a dozen AI APIs to a white-label or open-source website builder, and you're basically there. All you need is a front-end that takes a prompt, and you can have the AI fill in a standard, editable site template with AI-generated text. It won't be any good, but it will allow anyone to create a website in just a few minutes—which looks great in demo videos and sounds awesome in marketing copy.

Similarly, vibe coding apps can legitimately create any kind of website with a decent measure of success in just a few minutes. Both ChatGPT and Claude have features that allow you to publish something quickly on the web too. Is it a website? Well, it's not not a website. But it's not exactly a marketing site for a small business or a portfolio for an independent artist. 

And finally, there's so much money being thrown around in AI that people are jumping in with half-baked tech demos, vibe-coded nonsense, and AI-bolted on top of awful template-based builders. 

Of course, there are a handful of good AI website builders out there—though it's not normally the AI that makes them good but everything else around it. You shouldn't have to vibe code a blog engine or payments system from scratch; it should be included. Updating your website shouldn't take $50 worth of API credits; it should use a simple web app. Not only do good apps build the website, but they also make it possible to maintain and use it.

So, here's what I was looking for in an AI website builder:

• Enable you to make a great-looking site. Theme-based website builders have set the bar really high here, so there's no need for a website to look like it was built using Dreamweaver in 2005. This requirement actually tripped up some of the more vibe code-y AI-powered builders I considered: they could take a written prompt, but they somehow managed to make something awful from it.

• Make it easy to build a real site. Creating a one-page (or even multi-page) site from a prompt with AI-generated text is really simple now. But building a website that you can keep updated, use to run a blog, or sell products is a totally different story. I was only interested in apps that build sites you could use.

• Truly build custom sites. The quickest and most cynical way to make an AI website builder is to have it take a prompt and then slot that information into a single generic theme. Changing the prompt just changes the headers and maybe the images, not the actual layout of the site. I won't link to them, but I ran into a huge number of tools like this. For an app to get featured here, it had to allow you to build genuinely custom sites. It should be an AI-generated website, but it shouldn't feel like an AI-generated website.

Wix is one of the best website-building tools across the board. It's on Zapier's lists of the best free website builders, the best blog sites, and the best eCommerce platforms. So it's no wonder that it also tops the list of the best AI website builders.

Wix's AI site builder manages to balance usability and functionality. You start by chatting with a chatbot (called Aria), answering questions about what kind of site you want to build. It's effective and genuinely seems to affect how your site looks when you move on to the Harmony AI site builder.

There, you build your site from a prompt. Wix will prefill one based on your earlier requirements, but you can tweak it if you need to. You can use Aria to make changes or just help out. This is all operating in Wix's great website builder, so you can also drag and drop things, change text directly, upload media, and add sections like a blog, contact form, or store. I hit the odd bug (probably because I'm using Safari instead of Chrome), but it all works very well. Once you change the stock text and images to your own content, you can spin up a site in less than an hour. 

Wix's killer feature is that its AI site builder ties into the rest of Wix's ecosystem. You can build your site with AI but run your blog, online store, booking system, or anything else through the Wix backend. You aren't building these things from scratch for no reason. There aren't many other AI-powered site builders that can match Wix on practicality. 

One thing to keep in mind: Wix recently announced it was laying off 20% of its staff and restructuring around its headless AI site-creation tool (Wix Vibe) to stay competitive with popular vibe-coding tools like Lovable and Bolt. As of now, Wix's core products haven't changed, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Wix also integrates with Zapier, which means those activities don't stay siloed—they can feed into AI-orchestrated workflows across your business. Framer has one of the most powerful AI website builders. It uses top-tier models from OpenAI and Anthropic to power its design agent. That means you can burn through credits quickly, but you can use it to get great results. Its Figma-like design experience allows you to control and rein in the AI so it's not just working from nothing. Set a design system, and it'll actually stick to it. 

The big difference between Framer and a lot of other AI website generators is that Framer actually works. You can build a seriously great looking website, and there's a real CMS to back it up. It's still pretty design-forward; it helps to be familiar with HTML, CSS, and general design principles to make the most of it. 

If you're a designer who wants the level of control and customizability that Framer brings to the table, it's well worth using. The AI agents do their job well, and everything else is polished. You're definitely encouraged to make a few different mockups with Framer and then launch your site rather than just launch the first thing you build, but if Framer appeals to you, that's probably what you want to do anyway.

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world. There are millions of WordPress sites out there, and as someone who's used it a lot, I can assure you it's pretty good. Maybe a touch heavy in places, but the massive amount of third-party plugins and support more than makes up for it. That's why 10Web makes this list: its AI website builder creates a WordPress site. 

It works like any other prompt-based tool: you tell it what you want, and it builds it. (You can also give it Figma files or an existing website to build from.) I found the two to three minutes it claimed it would take to build the initial site was closer to 20 minutes, but the results were really solid. 

When it came to editing, I easily was able to make changes like converting a static header image into a slider with a prompt, and 10Web even gives you access to the code it wrote. There's a visual editor as well for when you need it. All in all, I was very impressed with how seamless it was.

And, of course, you have full access to WordPress. You can build an online store, run a blog, and use the countless third-party plugins and add-ons. You might have to make a few tweaks to get them to work with the theme, but that's what the AI tools are for. 

A couple things to keep in mind: 10Web works using a dedicated WordPress theme, so it won't work with a custom theme you already have. You also only get 100 credits/month, and each prompt takes a credit. If you decide to make all your changes with the AI (instead of the visual editor) and get into the nitty gritty, you could run out—but most people will be fine.

Over the past few years, AI tools have gotten substantially better at coding; that's made them substantially better at building websites. As a result, there are dedicated AI website builders—but also, most related tools now have some AI features built in. 

As I said at the top, my preferred way to build a website with AI is to use WordPress, Ghost, or some other framework and an AI coding tool like Codex or Claude Code. It gives me all the control I want, and I'm not tied into any one platform. This, however, is obviously the more technical approach. If you want the simplest route, Wix or 10Web is the way to go. Framer is also a great fit for designers. 

If none of these tools are what you're looking for, there are a few other options worth considering.

• If you really want to launch a site quickly, check out Carrd or one of the other best landing page builders. While they don't use AI, you'll still be able to get something solid up and on the web in an hour or two for less money.

• Relume is a nice AI-powered website design tool, but you have to export your design to Webflow if you want to turn it into an actual website. Figma Make is also incredibly powerful, but you want to be comfortable working with Figma to make the most of it.  

• Julius can get you a website in literal seconds—and it can also make presentations, videos, and other content types. If you need a jack-of-all-trades, it's worth a look, but there's no visual site editor to back it up.

• Shopify, Squarespace, and all the other big names in website building are adding various AI-powered features. They're worth a look if you use the platform, though they don't yet offer the full feature set of the apps on this list. 

AI website builders have gotten significantly better over the last year, but I still feel that the best AI website builders are website builders first, and AI-powered second. If you can't actually run the site you build, what's the point?
