Hi there!

We're looking for a Product Manager who knows how to design, code, and build internal tools to join the product team at Zapier. Zapier has nearly 100 teammates and to uphold our fifth company value we're creating a team to increase our efficiency as an organization. Interested in helping design, code, and build tools that helps Zapier automate our work? Then read on…

We know applying for and taking on a new job at any company requires a leap of faith. We want you to feel comfortable and excited to apply at Zapier. To help share a bit more about life at Zapier here are a few resources in addition to the job description that can give you an inside look at what life is like at Zapier. Hopefully you'll take the leap of faith and apply.

About You

You've built software by yourself. On a daily basis, you'll research, design, code, iterate, maintain, and measure internal tools that increase efficiency and effectiveness of teams inside Zapier. Your skillset probably includes: doing user research, writing SQL to do analysis, coding in Javascript (React) and Python or similar languages, and implementing your styles in CSS.

You like ownership and moving quickly. As the first full-time contributor to our internal tools team, you'll set the pace and that pace is fast. While we have a handful of teammates who contribute part-time to internal tools, it will be your primary responsibility to guide and scope our efforts to maximize this team's impact on the organization.

You love open source. We've built dozens of internal tools (keeping with our fifth company value) over the years and open sourced many like Django Drip, Rest Hooks, Django Knowledge, and our platform itself. Open sourcing our tools enables us to have even broader impact beyond the walls of Zapier.

You are a skilled written communicator. Zapier is a 100% remote team and written communication is critical. You'll use summaries and reports to communicate findings, objectives and plans to the team. You'll also help manage the day-to-day cadence of projects in our team's Slack channels.

You love doing things efficiently. At Zapier, the work you do will have a disproportionate impact on the business. We believe in systems and processes that let us scale our impact to be larger than ourselves.

You love to set your own course with our shared set of goals. At Zapier, you'll have a weekly project meetings and then you go make things happen. You default to action.

Things You Might Do

Zapier is a startup, so you'll likely get experience on many different projects across the organization. Here are some things you'll get a taste of:

  • Research and improve "Async", a communication tool we built and use adjacent to Slack
  • Research and improve "Loki", an issue-tracking tool we built to for our support and platform teams use to track app issues owned by our partners
  • Research and improve "Rover", a tool that's like a CRM of all the apps on Zapier
  • Talk to teams and figure out how software could make them more efficient or effective, then build it
  • Help teams analyze and report their results by building dashboards and reporting systems
  • Measure and report results of your work (creating dashboards, writing SQL, etc.)
  • Maintain a high level of autonomy
  • Following in line with Zapier's All Hand Support philosophy you'll help customers via support to ensure they have the best experience possible
  • Experiment: this is a startup so everything can change

About Zapier

For the past five years, Zapier has been helping people across the world automate the boring and tedious parts of their job. We do that by helping everyone connect the web applications they already use and love.

We believe that there are jobs a computer is best at doing and that there are jobs a human is best at doing. We want to empower businesses to create processes and systems that let computers do what they are best at doing and let humans do what they are best at doing.

We believe that with the right tools, you can have big impact with less hassle.

We believe in small teams. Small teams are fast and nimble. Small teams mean less bureaucracy and less management and more getting things done.

We believe that credentials don't say everything. Our CTO has a finance degree. Our CEO has an engineering degree. Our CPO has a mechanical engineering degree. What you love doing is way more important than the credentials you have.

We believe in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. All teammates at Zapier agree to a code of conduct.

How to Apply

We have a non-standard application process. Creativity is certainly encouraged. To jump start the process we ask a few questions we normally would ask at the start of an interview. This helps speed up the process and lets us get to know you a bit better right out the gate. Make sure to answer each question. Have fun with them. :-)

Complete this form with answers to the questions below. Make sure each answer stands alone as we review question-by-question instead of applicant-by-applicant.

  1. Why will you be a good fit for this role?
  2. Share links to sites that showcase your professional works (GitHub, LinkedIn, Twitter, Personal Site, etc). We'd love to see something live-on-the-internet that you've built entirely yourself.
  3. Pick a specific piece of software you designed, coded, shipped, and managed entirely yourself. Tell us about why you built it, how you built it, and if it was successful and how you knew.
  4. Fully staffed product teams at Zapier include at least a product manager, an engineer, and a designer. To be a successful product manager (as the first hire) for this team you'll need to do a bit of each. Which area is your strength? Which area is your preference? Which area do you want to grow in?
  5. Optional: Share anonymously some demographic information about yourself to help us better track trends related to the backgrounds of candidates interested in working at Zapier in order for us to build a team that represents the users at Zapier and the broader world population.

Finally, wait for us to reply. We reply to everyone, even if we don't seem like a good fit.
