I have an engineering degree, which I once bravely attempted to use for its intended purpose. I tried connecting devices that absolutely didn't want to be connected. My smart setup included a light that needed one app, a plug that needed another app, and a speaker that refused to talk to either of them.

That small adventure taught me that integrations sound simple until they meet real-world systems. They just disagree, pretty fundamentally, about who's going to be doing the work.

In this guide, I'll cover what MuleSoft is, how many integrations MuleSoft offers, how the connector library compares to Zapier's, and how to decide which one actually fits your stack.

## What is MuleSoft?

MuleSoft is an [enterprise integration platform](https://zapier.com/blog/best-enterprise-integration-platforms/) that connects software systems—ERPs, CRMs, databases, internal apps, the works—so data can move between them without a human in the loop doing copy-paste duty. It's owned by Salesforce, and its main product is called Anypoint Platform, the workspace where developers actually build and manage integrations.

That design pays off most in big, complex environments where dozens of systems need to share data under strict governance, security, and compliance rules.

## How many integrations does MuleSoft have?

MuleSoft offers 250+ prebuilt connectors in Anypoint Exchange, covering the kind of systems large enterprises tend to run on: Salesforce, SAP, Workday, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, NetSuite, ServiceNow, major databases, and the cloud and on-prem infrastructure those systems sit on.

That number is smaller than what some other automation platforms advertise, and that's by design. MuleSoft isn't trying to be the everything bagel of integration tools. This is the "flexibility" MuleSoft marketing materials love to mention—and it's real—but it also means a developer needs to build it, test it, document it, and maintain it forever.
- **Community-published connectors:** Partners and developers contribute connectors to Anypoint Exchange for more niche or industry-specific tools. The breadth is helpful, but quality varies depending on who built and last maintained the connector. It's worth checking the support tier and last update date before committing.
- **Generic protocol connectors:** [REST, SOAP,](https://zapier.com/blog/soap-vs-rest/) HTTP, FTP, JDBC, and similar—these are how MuleSoft handles anything that exposes an API but doesn't have a dedicated connector yet. They work, but you're writing the integration logic yourself.

If that last bit sounds involved, that's because it is. MuleSoft was built for deep, structured integrations in environments where someone is going to scrutinize every connection. Compared to Zapier's , which are designed to be wired up by anyone with a working knowledge of their own tools, the MuleSoft library expects you to bring an integration architect to the conversation.

The library is narrower than Zapier's by an order of magnitude (it's about _36 times smaller_), but every connector is built to handle the kind of structured [API integration](https://zapier.com/blog/api-integration/) that some systems demand.

Zapier's  app integrations skew the opposite direction—breadth, with depth where it counts on the apps people use every day. Zapier's coverage is dense at the SaaS end of the stack. That includes the obvious categories—marketing automation, CRM, support, productivity—plus the newer ones that change fastest, like AI tools and agents. 

### Ease of use

MuleSoft is built for high-complexity environments, which is a polite way of saying developers are usually involved early and often. Setting up integrations means [understanding APIs](https://zapier.com/blog/api/), data mapping, authentication, error handling, and your organization's governance policies. That level of control is valuable in environments where data integrity matters more than speed, but it also means changes flow through technical teams.

Zapier is designed so that the folks who need a workflow can build it. The trigger-and-action interface is approachable for non-developers, and the platform layers in advanced logic—things like filters, paths, webhooks, and custom code steps—when workflows get more sophisticated. The result is that simple automations stay simple, and complex ones don't require a sprint to ship.

### Customization

MuleSoft offers deep customization for teams that need precise control over API integration, data transformations, and [process orchestration](https://zapier.com/blog/process-orchestration/). You can design tailored workflows down to the field level, build custom connectors for systems that don't have one, and define exactly how data gets transformed between systems. For organizations with strict compliance requirements—health care, finance, government—that level of control puts MuleSoft on the shortlist.

With Zapier, customization is less about deep code and more about making flexibility usable. You can add filters, branching paths, lookup tables, custom error handling, webhooks, and custom API calls directly inside a workflow. Plans are tiered by task volume, with transparent monthly pricing starting at $19.99 per month for the entry paid plan and a free plan for small workflows. You can start, test ideas, and scale usage without procurement approvals or a multi-month rollout. There's also a team plan that gives you access for up to 25 users for just $69/month (total, not per person). Only when you're ready will you need to hop on a call to learn about enterprise options.

## MuleSoft or Zapier: How do you decide?

Both platforms handle application integration, but they start from very different assumptions about who's at the keyboard. Choose MuleSoft if you need deep, developer-led integrations. Choose Zapier if you want fast, flexible automation that your team can build and adjust without filing engineering tickets. Either way, you're getting trusted security and governance at the enterprise level.

Before you commit, pressure-test the choice against the work your team actually does. A few questions to ask yourself:
